What a Stewardship Ministry is NOT!

Our friend, Gunnar Johnson, Founder of Learn Generosity, recently published a blog titled ‘What a Stewardship Ministry is NOT.’ Using his experience and expertise as a Stewardship Pastor and Coach, we thought it would be valuable to repost portions of his blog.

In order to better understand all that a stewardship ministry can be, it’s helpful to understand and communicate to people what it’s not.

Here are six things a stewardship ministry is not:
  1. We’re not the business office.
  2. We aren’t accountants.
  3. We’re not the benevolence ministry.
  4. We’re not just for people hurting financially.
  5. We’re not a fundraising ministry, trying to rub elbows with rich people to make them give more.
  6. We’re not a capital campaign.

Gunnar cautions churches to keep stewardship from being classified into one of those categories. Gunnar explains, “once you get that reputation, it’s hard to shake. I was seen as the ‘benevolence guy’ at this last church, and my friends didn’t want anything to do with the stewardship ministry because they thought it was for broke people. I work hard to avoid the stereotype that stewardship is only for people who are struggling financially. We are all ‘asset managers’ for God, and we all need to be trained and equipped to make wise decisions.”

Let’s start developing strategies to lead a holistic stewardship ministry – one that meets the needs of those struggling financially and teaches givers at every level the importance of generosity. Fill out the form below for a demo of MortarStone and coaching consult.
